In addition to breaking down barriers for female rappers, Hill is credited with popularizing melodic rapping and introducing hip hop and neo soul to mainstream music.
Her 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which became one of the best-selling albums of all time, and her membership with the Fugees are two of her most well-known accomplishments.
Hill has received many honors, including eight Grammy Awards, which is still the most for a female rapper.
Regarding her musically inclined family, Hill has said: “There were so many records and there was always music playing.
My father sang, my mother played the piano, and there was always music playing around us.”
Her father provided music for weddings and local nightclubs.
Hill regularly listened to Gladys Knight, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin while growing up.
