Gloria Carter Spann was born in Plains, Georgia in 1926. She was married twice in her life. In 1964, she resigned from the Baptist Church the Carters belonged to after the church voted not to lift its ban on blacks from attending. She was an involved part of her community, volunteering for a variety of organizations, including the Carter Center. She died in 1990, at the age of 64.

Gloria Carter Spann was better known as a motorcyclist and activist. Spann was the sister of former president Jimmy Carter. She was noted as one of the first women inducted into Harley-Davidson’s 100,000 Mile Club, was named Most Outstanding Female Motorcyclist in 1978, and worked as an activist for motorcycle rights.
