American blues guitarist and songwriter Robert Leroy Johnson lived from May 8, 1911, through August 16, 1938.

His seminal records from 1936 and 1937 have a singing voice, guitar prowess, and songwriting genius that have impacted subsequent generations of performers. Despite having a brief seven-month recording career, he is now regarded as a master of the blues, particularly the Delta blues style, and one of the most significant performers of the 20th century. He is referred to as “the first-ever rock star” by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The original records’ owner, Brunswick Records, was acquired by Columbia Records, where Hammond worked. Similarly unaware of Johnson’s passing, musicologist Alan Lomax travelled to Mississippi in 1941 to record him.

King of the Delta Blues Singers, an album of Johnson’s recordings that Law put together while working for Columbia Records at the time, was issued by Columbia in 1961.
