The Cure is widely noted as an English rock band that was formed in 1978 in Crawley, West Sussex. Throughout numerous lineup changes since the band’s formation, guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter Robert Smith has remained the only constant member. The band’s debut album, Three Imaginary Boys in 1979, along with several early singles, placed the band in the post-punk and new wave movements that had sprung up in the United Kingdom.

Beginning with their second album, Seventeen Seconds in 1980, the band adopted a new, increasingly dark and tormented style, which, together with Smith’s stage look, had a strong influence on the emerging genre of gothic rock as well as the subculture that eventually formed around the genre.

According to the band leader Robert Smith, The Cure just isn’t a goth band. When people say to me, you’re goth, I say you either have never heard us play or you have no idea what goth is. One of those two has to be true because we’re not a goth band. I remember just for a while, goths were outraged that people would think we’re a goth band.

Goth came into existence in the late 70s and early 80s punk movements. Out of that came various sub-genres, some of which combined dark clothing and music. At least in that era, goth songs incorporated heavy bass, and keyboard, and their overall theme sounded mysterious, melancholic, and cold.
