On June 3, 1942, Curtis Mayfield was born in Chicago, Illinois, to parents Marion Washington and Kenneth Mayfield. His siblings are number four.

He was just five years old when his father left them. The children were transported about by his mother and maternal grandmother before they ultimately arrived in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighbourhood.

A catastrophe struck Mayfield on August 13, 1990. While he was playing on stage at Wingate Field in Flatbush, Brooklyn, lighting equipment crashed into him. Because of this calamity, he became paralyzed from the neck down.

He was a strong man who persevered in his profession as a recording artist despite being paralyzed from the neck down due to an accident on stage.
