John Graham Mellor, better known as Joe Strummer, was a British singer, musician, and songwriter who lived from August 21, 1952, to December 22, 2002.

He was a member of the 1976-formed punk music band the Clash as well as its co-founder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist, and co-lead vocalist. Give ‘Em Enough Rope, the second album by The Clash, peaked at No. 2 on the UK charts in 1978.

Strummer and his brother David, then 10 years old, started attending the City of London Freemen’s School in Surrey when they were nine years old. For the following seven years, they barely saw their parents.

Later, he added, “When I was nine years old, I had to say goodbye to them since they had moved abroad, possibly to Africa. After leaving boarding school, I only saw my parents once a year since the government paid for that to happen. I attended this school where thick rich people sent their thick affluent children after being left on my own. Another benefit of my father’s profession, which had many benefits, was that the government covered all of the costs.”
