Miriam Makeba was popular in her time and had preached along her way to stardom. Miriam Makeba had a great life although she was in exile. She had tried to return back to her motherland, South Africa in 1960 but had found out her passport was canceled, which in turn made her an exile.
Later that year she signed with RCA Victor and released Miriam Makeba, her first U.S. studio album. Throughout the 1960s she spoke out against apartheid in South Africa.
