William Everett was the first husband of Gloria Carter Spann who was a motorcyclist and activist. Spann was the sister of former president Jimmy Carter. She was noted as one of the first women inducted into Harley-Davidson’s 100,000 Mile Club, was named Most Outstanding Female Motorcyclist in 1978, and worked as an activist for motorcycle rights.

Carter Spann and William Everett were married for four years from 1945 to 1949. The couple shares a son named William Carter Spann. Everett was a war hero from Americus and a former drug store clerk.

Gloria was born in Plains, Georgia in 1926. She was married twice in her life. In 1964, she resigned from the Baptist Church the Carters belonged to after the church voted not to lift its ban on blacks from attending. She was an involved part of her community, volunteering for a variety of organizations, including the Carter Center. She died in 1990, at the age of 64.
