David Eli Ruffin was an American soul singer and musician best known for his work as one of the Temptations’ lead singers from 1964 to 1968 during the group’s “Classic Five” period. He was the lead singer on hit songs like “My Girl” and “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.”

Ruffin, known for his distinct raspy and anguished tenor vocals, was named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2008. For his work with the Temptations, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Marvin Gaye, another Motown recording artist, once said of Ruffin, “I heard [in his voice] a strength my voice lacked.”

Ruffin recorded his first released record with the songs “You and I” in 1958 b/w “Believe Me” after moving to Detroit with the Bushes in 1958. These songs were recorded at Vega Records and released under the name “Little David Bush,” using his guardian’s surname. Ruffin would later recall how he first recorded “a different kind of music” for Vega in Detroit, heavily influenced by the smoother pop and R&B of the time.

Dennis Edwards Jr. was the one who replaced David Ruffin in the temptation. Dennis Edwards Jr. born February 3, 1943, was an American soul and R&B singer best remembered as the vocalist for Motown Records’ The Temptations.

Edwards replaced David Ruffin in the Temptations in 1968 and performed with them from 1968 to 1976, from 1980 to 1984, and from 1987 to 1989. He attempted a solo career in the mid-1980s, earning a hit with “Don’t Look Any Further” in 1984 featuring Siedah Garrett. Edwards was the lead singer of The Temptations Review, a Temptations splinter group, until his death.
