Wright began singing at the age of four and was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the United States, in 1946.

Wright and her sister Kim were reared by their mother Essie and grandmother while their father served in the Korean War. The Wright family alternated between South Carolina and Detroit before finally settling there as Wright started high school.

Wright was unable to pursue a career in dance due to financial constraints; instead, she turned her attention to a music career, joining a number of singing groups before getting a work as a receptionist for Motown in 1965.
