Jerry Springer, the iconic talk show host and former mayor of Cincinnati, passed away at age 79 on April 27, 2023, after battling a “brief illness.”
Survived by his daughter Katie Springer, whom he shared with ex-wife Micki Velton, Jerry was known for his strong bond with his only child.
Katie, who was born in 1976, shared a close relationship with her father, which was evident when they performed a waltz together on season 3 of Dancing with the Stars. Jerry learned the dance specifically with his daughter in mind, and it became one of the most memorable moments on the show, according to judge Len Goodman.
Despite living a private life, Katie has always spoken highly of her father, emphasizing the valuable lessons he imparted on her. She expressed her gratitude for his teachings and revealed that Jerry always wanted his family to have everything they desired.
Not many know that Katie is legally blind and deaf in one ear, having been born without nasal passages. However, she never let her health challenges hold her back, thanks to the unwavering support and encouragement from her parents.
In addition to her personal challenges, Katie worked as an assistant teacher at Chicago’s Park School, where she dedicated herself to children with special needs. Jerry even donated $230,000 to the school to build “Katie’s Corner,” a facility catering to students with disabilities.
Katie’s wedding in December 2006 was a special moment for her and Jerry, as they danced together in a heartwarming father-daughter moment. Jerry had initially been hesitant to participate in the dance competition but changed his mind after Katie convinced him that it would be a memorable experience for both of them.
Despite facing his own fears, Jerry always instilled in Katie the importance of facing challenges head-on and doing the best one can, regardless of the circumstances.
Katie, in turn, has praised her father for his kindness and generosity, even going as far as to say he would make a great President of the United States.
