In September 1996, Amy Carter married computer consultant James Gregory Wentzel, whom she had met while attending Tulane; Wentzel was a manager at Chapter Eleven, an Atlanta bookstore, where Carter worked part-time. After she graduated from the Memphis College of Art, the couple moved to the Atlanta area, where they focused on raising their son. They were married for three years and divorced and she married John Joseph “Jay” Kelly in 2007. She had another son in 2010.
