Sheppard, the daughter of Artie Mae and Charles “Shelton” Sheppard, was born in Banks, Alabama. She was raised on a farm that her parents owned and ran. Sheppard wed James Erskine Guy as her first husband when she was a senior in high school.
After the birth of their daughter Lycrecia in 1941, the couple quickly divorced.
In 1943, Sheppard met Hank Williams. Williams’ mother and bandmates objected, but Sheppard was eventually brought in as an occasional singer and upright bassist.
Ten days after Sheppard’s divorce from her first husband was finalized in December 1944, the two got hitched. A justice of the peace conducted the ceremony at the officiant’s gas station in Andalusia, Alabama.
