As a teenager, she was the lead vocalist for the girl group The Gems. Minnie Riperton went on to sing backup vocals for a number of well-known artists, including Etta James, Ramsey Lewis, Fontella Bass, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, and Chuck Berry.

From 1967 to 1971, she was also the lead singer for the band Rotary Connection. In 1970, her debut studio album, Come to My Garden, was released. Perfect Angel, Riperton’s 1974 album, debuted at #1 on the US R&B chart and #4 on the Billboard 200.
