Owens attended middle school at Loyola Academy of St. Louis before playing high school football at Christian Brothers College (CBC) for Coach Scott Pingel.

Owens won the CBC Linebacker of the Year award during his high school career.

In the 2013 season, Owens’ redshirt year came to an end, and he began playing defensive back for Missouri Western State University (MWSU). Owens was named the MWSU Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2017 during his last season. Owens was named to the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Second Team for the 2017 campaign. Owens spent the entirety of his academic career on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. With a pre-physical therapy major and a medical career in mind, he graduated.
