Initial achievement Marvin Gaye achieved fame in 1962 as a co-writer and drummer for the Marvelettes’ song “Beechwood 4-5789.”

Later that September, he released “Stubborn Kind of Fellow,” his debut solo hit, which peaked at No. 8 on the R&B chart and No. 46 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Beginning in October 1962, Gaye participated in the Motortown Revue, a string of musical tours that made stops around the northeastern and southeastern shores of the country as part of the Chitlin’ Circuit, a collection of rock performances at venues that catered mostly to musicians of color.

In June 1963, Gaye gave a performance at the Apollo Theater that was captured on film. Marvin Gaye Recorded Live on Stage, a live CD, was released by Tamla later that October. One of Gaye’s earliest global hits was “Can I Get a Witness.”
