American musician, songwriter, and poet Lewis Allan Reed passed away on October 27, 2013.
He was born on March 2, 1942. He had a solo career that lasted five decades in addition to being the guitarist, singer, and primary songwriter for the rock group the Velvet Underground.
What was Lou Reed cause of death?
For many years, Reed battled hepatitis and diabetes. Toward the end of his life, he engaged in tai chi. Despite receiving interferon therapy, he got liver cancer. He got a liver transplant at the Cleveland Clinic in May 2013.
Later, he posted on his website that he felt “larger and stronger” than ever, but on October 27, 2013, he passed away at the age of 71 from liver disease at his home in East Hampton, New York. His ashes were cremated and donated to his family.
His widow, Laurie Anderson, referred to him as a “prince and a fighter” and added that he passed away peacefully.
Many other musicians paid tribute to Reed, including David Byrne, Patti Smith, David Bowie, Morrissey, Iggy Pop, Courtney Love, Lenny Kravitz, and many more. In response to Reed’s passing, former Velvet Underground members Moe Tucker and John Cale made remarks, and many beyond the music industry, such Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, expressed their condolences.
