What is the meaning of Umm Kulthum?

Umm Kulthum was an Egyptian singer, lyricist, and cinema actress who was born on December 31, 1898, as Fatima Ibrahim es-Sayyid el-Beltagi. She was given the honorary title “Kawkab el-charq” (‘Oriental Star’). In Egypt, she is renowned as “The Voice of Egypt,” “The Lady of Arabic Song,” and “Egypt’s Fourth Pyramid,” among other titles.

Umm Kulthum was born to a devout family in the Nile Delta village of Tamay e-Zahayra, Dakahlia Governorate, to her father Ibrahim El-Sayyid El-Beltagi, an imam from Egypt’s countryside, and her mother Fatmah El-Maleegi, a housewife. After observing her father educate her older brother, Khalid, she learned to sing. From a young age, she was a natural singer.
