Capaldi was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and lived there until he was 4 years old before the family moved to Bathgate in West Lothian. He is the son of Mark Capaldi and Carole Capaldi. His mother is known to be a nurse and his father is a fishmonger. Capaldi is of Scottish, Irish, and Italian ancestry. He is the youngest of four children. His birth came as a surprise to his family after his father underwent a vasectomy.
