American singer and entertainer Jack Leroy Wilson Jr. (June 9, 1934 – January 21, 1984) dominated the 1950s and 1960s. He had a significant role in the evolution of rhythm and blues into soul music.

He was known as “Mr Excitement” and was regarded as one of the most energetic vocalists and performers in the history of soul, R&B, and rock and roll. He was also known as a brilliant showman.

What caused Jackie Wilson’s death?

Wilson suffered complications from pneumonia and passed away on January 21, 1984, at the age of 49. At first, he was laid to rest in an unmarked grave at the nearby Westlawn Cemetery in Detroit.

In order to buy a mausoleum, supporters contributed money in 1987 through a fundraising organized by Orlando DJ “Jack the Rapper” Gibson.

Wilson was buried in the mausoleum at Westlawn Cemetery in Wayne, Michigan, on June 9, 1987—his 53rd birthday. Eliza Wilson, his mother, who passed away in 1975, was also buried there.
