Native American activist Sacheen Littlefeather, who made headlines in 1973 by famously refusing to accept the Oscar for best actor on Marlon Brando’s behalf, has passed away. She had reached the age of 75.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed Littlefeather’s passing on Sunday. Littlefeather disclosed her breast cancer metastasis in a Facebook post at the start of 2021, yet her cause of death was not immediately made public.

Only a few weeks had passed since Littlefeather received an apology from the academy for the mistreatment she had experienced.
