George Ivan Morrison, the only child of George Morrison, an electrician at a shipyard, and Violet Stitt Morrison, a former vocalist and tap dancer, was born on August 31, 1945, at 125 Hyndford Street in Bloomfield, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The home’s previous owner was the father of author Lee Child. Morrison’s family were Protestant working-class immigrants from Belfast who were derived from the Ulster-Scots community.
He participated in various Irish showbands as an adolescent in the late 1950s, playing a range of instruments including guitar, harmonica, keyboards, and saxophone while performing covers of the time’s top singles. Morrison, better known to his followers as “Van the Man,” became well-known in the middle of the 1960s as the main vocalist of the Northern Irish R&B and rock group Them. He co-wrote the iconic “Gloria” by the garage band Them.
