Quintanilla is a veteran in addition to being a musician. According to Patowski’s memoir, he was conscripted into the military in 1961.
While assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, which is close to Tacoma, Washington, he met Selena’s mother.
Later, Quintanilla’s father worked as an auto body mechanic.
Quintanilla enrolled at Roy Miller High School and quickly joined forces with two of his friends to establish the Gumdrops, a high school chorus. As a senior, Abraham left Roy Miller High School to focus on his career. Maria was vehemently opposed to her son’s wish to pursue a career as a singer.
