Montell Jordan parents: Elijah Jordan, Deloris Jordan

Jordan was raised in South Central Los Angeles, where he was born, by his parents, Elijah Jordan and Deloris Jordan.

His father was a bookkeeper, while his mother worked for a microfilm company. Later, Jordan would attribute the unusually upbeat (for genres influenced by hip-hop) elements of his songs to his upbringing in a two-parent home.

The 1995 hit song “This Is How We Do It,” which included a Slick sample Jordan’s debut album was Rick’s earlier Def Jam smash, “Children’s Story.”

According to conversations with Jordan, the song is a “reflection of what street life was for a teenager who grew up in the neighborhood.”

The song spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it reached its pinnacle.

As a result of the single’s enormous popularity, Jordan’s debut album reached platinum status after selling more than a million copies.
