Satchmo, Satch, and Pops were all monikers for Louis Daniel Armstrong, an American trumpeter and singer. He was one of the most important people in jazz. His career spans five decades as well as many jazz periods.
Up to the age of five, Louis Armstrong was nurtured by his grandmother before being given back to his mother. He was raised in a difficult neighbourhood on the southern end of Rampart Street called The Battlefield, where he experienced hardship. At age six, he enrolled in the racially segregated Fisk School for Boys in New Orleans, which allowed black students.

On August 4, 1901, Armstrong was born in New Orleans. Mary Estelle “Mayann” Albert and William Armstrong were his parents.
Mary Albert was born at home when she was approximately sixteen years old. She was from Boutte, Louisiana. They gave birth to Beatrice “Mama Lucy” Armstrong (1903-1987), who was reared by Albert, less than two years later. Shortly after, William Armstrong ran away from the family.
