Leva Mae and Charles Penniman welcomed their third child, Richard Wayne, into the world on December 5, 1932, in Macon, Georgia.
His father was a bricklayer, a church deacon, and the owner of the Tip Inn nightclub, which also offered illicit moonshine for sale.
His mother attended the New Hope Baptist Church in Macon. It was intended for him to go by “Ricardo,” but a misspelling resulted in “Richard.” His relatives called him “Lil’ Richard” because of his young, frail build.
