Mitchell’s mother’s ancestors were Scottish and Irish, while her father was from a Norwegian family with Sámi ancestors. Mitchell’s mother was a teacher, and her father was an RCAF flight lieutenant who trained new pilots at RCAF Station Fort Macleod. Mitchell later moved to various bases in western Canada with her parents.
Her father worked as a grocer after WWII, and her family relocated to Saskatchewan, settling in Maidstone and North Battleford.

Joni Mitchell has won ten Grammy Awards (eight competitive and one honorary), the first in 1969 and the most recent in 2022.
Mitchell received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, with the citation describing her as “one of the most important female recording artists of the rock era” and “a powerful influence on all artists who embrace diversity, imagination and integrity”.
Mitchell received the Kennedy Center Honor for a lifetime of achievement in the performing arts on December 4, 2021, at the Medallion Ceremony at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Mitchell went to see the show at the Kennedy Center the next day.
Mitchell was ranked 50th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “The 200 Greatest Singers of All Time” on January 1, 2023.
