The 89-year-old Marxist, dissident, unyielding, contrarian, stormy, and ferocious director Jean-Marie Straub passed away in Rolle, Switzerland, on the night of November 19 to 20, 2018.
In a singular human and artistic adventure on the periphery of the system, he co-wrote one of the most significant chapters of the modern film with his companion Danièle Huillet, who passed away on October 9, 2006.

Straub, who was born on January 8, 1933 in Metz, became interested in cinema after the war, initially marked by the lyrical and feverish films of Jean Grémillon, such as Remorques (Stormy Waters, 1941), Lumière d’été (“Summer Light,” 1942) and Le Ciel est à Vous (“The Sky is Yours,” 1943), works that were both popular and full of formal audacity.
Jean- Marie discovered them as presented by the influential critic Henri Agel at the La Chambre Noire film club in Metz.
