Wilson was shot and critically injured on February 15, 1961, in Manhattan by Juanita Jones. When he returned to his Manhattan apartment with another woman, fashion model Harlean Harris, an ex-girlfriend of Sam Cooke, Jones, one of his lovers, shot him out of jealous wrath.
The claim that she was a jealous fan was allegedly made up by Wilson’s management to defend Wilson’s reputation.
They asserted that Wilson was shot as a result of Jones’ interference. They described Jones as an obnoxious fan who had threatened to murder herself. Wilson was shot in the stomach, losing a kidney and having the bullet lodge too close to his spine for it to be removed.
