Ime Sunday Udoka is a Nigerian-American professional basketball coach and former player who now serves as the head coach of the NBA’s Boston Celtics. During his playing career, he was a member of the Nigeria national team.
His mom, who passed in late 2011, was an Illinois native.

Udoka’s coaching job on the 2019 FIBA World Cup squad allowed him to form ties with Celtics players Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Marcus Smart, all of whom campaigned for his hire as the next head coach in Boston. Udoka, along with Celtics assistant Will Hardy, also coached for Team USA under Popovich in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Udoka’s father was of Nigerian heritage, making him eligible for Nigerian citizenship. Mfon, his older sister, was a WNBA player.
Nia Long, Udoka’s then-girlfriend, gave birth to their first child, Kez Sunday Udoka, in November 2011.
