In Clarendon, Jamaica, Levy was born. Together with his cousin Everton Dacres, he started a group called the Mighty Multitude. In 1977, the group published “My Black Girl.” The next year, Levy launched his solo career with the release of “A Long Time Since We Don’t Have No Love.”
Despite the single’s commercial failure, the fourteen-year-old was a well-liked performer at Jamaican dancehalls.
Record producer Delroy Wright said in an August 2014 interview with Midnight Raver that it was his brother Hyman Wright who initially met Barrington Levy in the middle of the 1970s through Wade “Trinity” Brammer. Before introducing Barrington Levy to Henry “Junjo” Lawes, Hyman Wright allegedly recorded a number of songs with him, according to Delroy Wright.
