Levon Helm was born Mark Lavon Helm and he was widely known as an American musician who achieved fame as the drummer and one of the three lead vocalists for the Band, for which he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Helm also had a successful career as a film actor, appearing as Loretta Lynn’s father in Coal Miner’s Daughter in 1980, as Chuck Yeager’s friend and colleague Captain Jack Ridley in The Right Stuff in 1983, as a Tennessee firearms expert in Shooter in 2007, and as General John Bell Hood in In the Electric Mist in 2009.

How did Levon Helm pronounce his name?

In a report made by Helm about his autobiography was when Ronnie Hawkins invited Levon Helm to join his successful bar band named, The Hawks after Hawkins graduated from high school in 1958. Helm said the Hawks band members find it difficult to pronounce his name “Lavon” correctly, and instead, they called him “Levon” (LEE-von) because it is easier to pronounce.
