Crystal Gayle is a country music singer from the United States best remembered for her 1977 single “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.” Gayle’s management and record label were initially the same as those of her older sister, Loretta Lynn.
Crystal charted several country singles in the early to mid-1970s, but it wasn’t until 1977 that Crystal transcended her status as ‘Loretta’s younger sister’ and established herself as a country music star in her own right.
Do Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle have the same parents?
Gayle and Lynn had vastly different upbringings despite having the same biological father not mother. Gayle was born in a Kentucky mining village but reared in Wabash, Indiana after 1955. While it was a promising start, Gayle was bothered by the fact that the majority of her recognition stemmed from being Loretta Lynn’s sister.
Her connection to Lynn helped Gayle get a contract with Decca records in 1970. Her first single was a cover of her sister’s song “I’ve Cried the Blue Right Out of My Eyes,” and made it to the Top 30. While it was a good start, Gayle was troubled by the fact that most of her fame came from being the sister of Loretta Lynn. She sang Lynn’s songs and was encouraged to utilize her big sister’s style.
