His songs “The Ghetto,” “This Christmas,” “Someday We’ll All Be Free,” and “Little Ghetto Boy” are among the most well-known. In addition, Hathaway is well known for his interpretations of the songs “A Song for You,” “For All We Know,” and “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know,” as well as his many collaborations with Roberta Flack on the songs “Where Is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You.”

At the age of three, Hathaway started learning the piano and singing in the church choir with his grandmother, a famous gospel singer. Vashon High School awarded him a diploma in 1963.
The following year, Hathaway attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he studied music on a fine arts scholarship and met Roberta Flack. He belonged to the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Howard.
While there, Hathaway and drummer Ric Powell created a jazz trio, but in 1967 Hathaway left Howard University without getting a degree because she had received job offers in the music industry.
