Brenda Lee was born Brenda Mae Tarpley and she is a great singer who had just had a passion for her career, she retired after decades of living in the music, and Brenda Lee is now happily retired and spending quality time with her husband Ronnie Shacklett and two daughter and her three grandchildren.
Brenda Lee’s breakthrough is said to have come in February 1955, when she turned down $30 ($334 in 2022 value) to appear on a Swainsboro radio station to see Red Foley and a touring promotional unit of his ABC-TV program Ozark Jubilee in Augusta. An Augusta disc jockey persuaded Foley to hear her sing before the show. Foley did and agreed to let her perform “Jambalaya” on stage that night, unrehearsed.
Did Brenda Lee know Elvis?
Brenda Lee doesn’t seem to have known Elvis personally, but in 1957 she met Elvis Presley for the first time and performed with him in a Grand Ole Opry performance at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee with June Carter and her mother and two sisters. She said meeting Elvis Presley for the very first time is said to be one of her fondest memories.
