After collaborating on the tune “U Will Know” with the R&B ensemble Black Men United, he initially came to public recognition. His first studio album, Brown Sugar, was released in 1995 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
It earned a lot of praise from music reviewers and is credited with starting the neo-soul genre (RIAA). “Lady,” the album’s third song, peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 1991, Michael Archer and Precise, a musical group from his hometown of Richmond, Virginia, were successful when they competed in the Amateur Night competition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. To advance his music career, the 18-year-old dropped out of school and relocated to New York City.
