When Curtis was five years old, Mayfield’s father abandoned the family; his mother and maternal grandmother then relocated the family to a number of Chicago public housing projects until landing in Cabrini-Green when he was a teenager.
It is worth noting that Curtis Mayfield’s professional career began in 1956 when he joined the Roosters together with Jerry Butler, Arthur, and Richard Brooks. The Roosters became the Impressions two years later, with Sam Gooden now a member. Butler quit the band after the band’s two hit singles, “For Your Precious Love” and “Come Back My Love,” became successful.
