The American singer and songwriter Chaka Khan, also referred to as the Queen of Funk, is a 10-time Grammy Award winner. She rose to prominence in the 1970s as the lead singer and center of attention of the funk band Rufus.

Khan started a successful solo career in 1978 while being a member of the group. The songs “Tell Me Something Good,” “Sweet Thing,” “Ain’t Nobody,” “I’m Every Woman,” “I Feel for You,” and “Through the Fire” are among her most well-known hits, both with Rufus and as a solo artist.

In 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, Yvette Marie Stevens gave birth to Khan. Khan, the oldest of Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman’s five children, was raised in the impoverished Southside projects of Chicago.

Later, Yvonne Stevens, her sister, had popularity as a performer under the stage name Taka Boom. Mark Stevens, her lone brother, founded the funk band Aurra and achieved success as a musician.

Tammy McCrary, who serves as her manager, and Kathleen Burrell are two of her other sisters.
