R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia.
Why did R.E.M. break up?
R.E.M. was a great group that made tons of millions within a short span of their career. The group broke up in 2011 on mutual understanding between bandmates.
In recent news, guitarist Peter Buck had open up on why the band needed to split up and it was the best. According to Peter, it had nothing to do with the signing or songwriting. He said it was the money, the politics, having to meet new people 24 hours a day, not being in charge of my own decisions.”
The bandmates needed some time off to do what they wanted in life and the band had taken up all their time. To them, they felt sick and tired of the music industry and didn’t want to engage with it anymore at all
At this time, Buck made a list counting everything he hated about the music business during R.E.M.’s 31 year career,
That’s how it was decided.” It wasn’t that the band had felt like it had stopped creating good music, Buck went on, it was more simply they were growing tired of everything that went along with being in R.E.M. “We felt like we made a great last record,” he said.
