American soul singer Russell Allen Thompkins Jr. was born on March 21, 1951. Known for his high tenor, countertenor, and falsetto voices, he is best known as the founding member and original lead vocalist of the singing group The Stylistics.
The Stylistics achieved five gold songs and 12 consecutive Top 10 Billboard R&B singles with Russell as their main singer between 1971 and 1974.

The Stylistics scored five top 10 pop successes and twelve top ten R&B hits in a row from 1971 to 1974, including “You Make Me Feel Brand New,” “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart),” “Betcha by Golly, Wow,” “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart”),” and “Break Up to Make Up.”
With the exception of “You’re a Big Girl Now,” which was written and composed by Thom Bell and lyricist Linda Creed (1974’s “You Make Me Feel Brand New,” a No. 2 pop hit, was also sung lead by group member Airrion Love), all of these songs (and everything the group ever recorded) were led by Thompkins.
