Max Alfred “Maxi” Elliott, better known by his stage name Maxi Priest, is a British reggae singer of Jamaican heritage.
He was born on June 10, 1961. He is most known for singing reggae fusion, sometimes described as reggae with an R&B flavour. One of the most popular reggae fusion acts of all time, he was among the first international artists to find success in this genre.

Priest’s career as a musician had its start with him singing on the South London reggae sound system Saxon Studio International. Subsequently, he had a few independent single releases. His 1988 first album, Maxi (known as Maxi Priest in the US and Canada), combined with his rendition of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World,” made him one of the leading British reggae vocalists.
Along with UB40, he is one of just two British reggae acts to have had a song reach the top of the American Billboard chart with “Close to You” in 1990. “Set the Night to Music,” a duet with Roberta Flack, made it to the American Top Ten in 1991.
