The famous George Michael was an English singer and songwriter who was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou on June 25, 1963. Michael was raised in East Finchley, Middlesex, and first gained notoriety as a member of the musical group Wham! before starting a solo career. The band’s first two albums, Fantastic in 1983 and Make It Big in 1984, both peaked at number one on the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200 after Andrew Ridgeley and others joined forces to become Wham! in 1981.
“Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Last Christmas” were two of their top singles. To solidify their position as a global phenomenon, Wham! toured China in April 1985. This was the first time a Western popular music artist had ever visited China, and the tour received extensive international media coverage.
“Careless Whisper,” Michael’s debut solo single, peaked at number one in more than 20 nations, including the US and the UK. He rose to the position of 1988’s top-selling musician. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, his second solo album sold almost eight million copies.
How old was George Michael when he died?
Michael passed away in bed at his Goring-on-Thames home in the wee hours of Christmas Day 2016, when he was 53. Fadi Fawaz, his companion, discovered him. Michael’s death was attributed in March 2017 by a senior coroner in Oxfordshire to dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and a fatty liver.
Michael’s funeral was held on March 29, 2017, due to the delay in determining the cause of death. He was buried in Highgate Cemetery in north London, on one side of his mother’s tomb, in a private ceremony. Melanie, his sister who died three years after him, is buried on the other side.
