Theodore DeReese Pendergrass was a soul and R&B singer-songwriter from the United States. Pendergrass was born in the South Carolina town of Kingstree. Pendergrass grew up in the Philadelphia area and rose to prominence as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Pendergrass left the group in 1976 and went on to have a successful solo career on the Philadelphia International label, releasing five consecutive platinum albums.

Pendergrass’ career was put on hold after a car accident in March 1982 left him paralyzed from the waist down. Pendergrass continued his successful solo career until 2007, when he announced his retirement. In January 2010, he died of respiratory failure.
