Jamesetta Hawkins, better known as Etta James, was an American singer who sang gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, rock and roll, and soul. She was born on January 25, 1938, and passed away on January 20, 2012.

She started singing in 1954 and became well-known thanks to the singles “The Wallflower,” “At Last,” “Tell Mama,” “Something’s Got a Hold on Me,” and “I’d Rather Go Blind.” She battled a number of personal problems, including as heroin addiction, severe physical abuse, and jail, before making a musical comeback in the late 1980s with the album Seven Year Itch.

What happened between Beyoncé and Etta James?

Etta James attacked Beyonce Knowles harshly because she felt “left out.” The famed singer says that when she threatened Beyonce with a “a*s whip” for singing At Last at US President Barack Obama’s inauguration, Etta, 71, was merely kidding.

She also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. James was voted number 22 on the list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time published by Rolling Stone magazine, and she was placed number 62 on the list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

James, whose “gutsy, take-no-prisoners vocals colourfully interpret everything from blues and R&B/soul to rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, and gospel,” was named one of Billboard’s “35 Greatest R&B Artists of All Time” in 2015.
