Freddie Mercury had a committed relationship with Austin even though they were never married legally. In 1969, when he was 24 and she was 19, they connected through bandmate Brian May.

According to Biography.com, Austin grew up in a low-income neighborhood in south London where her mother worked as a housekeeper and her father as a wallpaper trimmer. Her parents were deaf, both of them.

Austin was adored by Mercury. “All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible,” he stated of their relationship. Mary is the only friend I have, and I don’t want any more. She was my common-law spouse to me. It was a marriage to me.

According to Mercury’s personal aide Peter Freestone, Austin was the object of Mercury’s loyalty because “Mary was there when he made the adjustment to being gay and she stood with him.
