Aretha Louise Franklin was a well-known American singer, songwriter, and pianist. She is often referred to as the “Queen of Soul”, and has twice been placed ninth in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. With global sales of over 75 million records, Franklin is one of the world’s best-selling music artists.

She was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, United States where she started her music career before she died on August 16, 2018, in Detroit, Michigan, United States at the age of 76.

On August 13, 2018, Franklin was reported to be gravely ill at her home in Riverfront Towers, Detroit, and was under the care of friends and family. Franklin died at her home on August 16, 2018, aged 76. The cause of death was revealed to be pancreatic cancer.
