William Jerrold “Jerry” Smith, the brother of Rosalynn Carter died at the Sumter County Retirement Village in Plains on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 20, 2003, at the age of 74 years. His cause of death was not revealed.
Smith was a native of Sumter County and was born on May 5, 1929, a son of the late Wilburn Edgar Smith and Frances Alethea “Miss Allie” Murray Smith. He worked in the steel industry as an industrial and civil engineer. He was a Methodist and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Smith survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jerrold Smith of Columbus, Ohio, and Kevin and Joey Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosalynn and former President Jimmy Carter of Plains and Alethea and Lee Wall of McDonough; a granddaughter, Astrid Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Helen Smith of Plains; and several nieces and nephews.
