American screenwriter William Dodson Broyles Jr. was born on October 8, 1944. In addition to the television program China Beach, he has written for the films Apollo 13, Cast Away, Entrapment, Planet of the Apes, Unfaithful, The Polar Express, and Jarhead.
He also wrote a portion of the script for Saving Private Ryan.

The son of William Dodson Broyles and Elizabeth (née Bills), Broyles was born in Houston, Texas. He was raised in Baytown, Texas, attended Rice University and received his B.A. in history there in 1966 after graduating from Robert E. Lee High School.
When he was a student at Rice, Broyles was an involved part of the community and a volunteer editor for the Rice Thresher.
Broyles began submitting pieces to the Houston Post in 1966. During the 1965–1966 academic year, Broyles presided over the Rice Student Association and received the Hugh Scott Cameron Award for distinguished civic work.
Throughout his career, he has continued to be a steadfast supporter of the university, giving the commencement address in 1983 and being honored as a distinguished alumnus in 1993.
