He was a linebacker and defensive end for Central Michigan in college football before being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Texans in 2022.
Hairston played in 11 games in 2018, his first season on the football team, and made five tackles, four of them solo. He participated in all 14 of the games and started two of them in 2019. He made 28 tackles, 15 of which were solo. In addition, he had two quarterback sacks, two quarterback hurries, and five TFLs. He was made the game captain for the matchup at Western Michigan.
Hairston led the Mid-American Conference (MAC) with 5.5 sacks and 12 TFLs in 2020, sharing the award for defensive player of the year. He was selected for Phil Steele’s All-MAC first team and Pro Football Focus’ third team.
