Wirfs was the first true freshman to start at offensive tackle during the Kirk Ferentz era, starting seven games there as a true freshman at right tackle. He improved his aggression at defenders throughout the season.
Due to an OWI arrest in late July, Wirfs missed the season opener versus Northern Illinois before his second year. Brandon Scherff’s Hawkeyes hang clean record was broken by Wirfs after his second season, and the new record was set at 450 pounds.
Additionally, he stated that bringing his achievements in the weight room to the field would be a goal of his junior season.
